Abundant Life Well-Being

What to Expect with Lea's TCM Diagnosis and Treatment

As an acupuncturist-herbalist trained by masters from China, the accuracy of diagnosis is viewed as vital for identifying the root of the problem. The treatment plan will be to balance the root in order to resolve the symptom(s), which are viewed as branches to an unhealthy/unbalanced root. This approach is for long-term resolution to improve the depth of wellness and to prevent the symptoms regenerating to the dis-eased state(s) that led to you seeking help. If someone is in great pain, then a treatment may be focused on treating that branch, with the plan to start/resume treating the root during the next session. If you've received acupuncture for a pain issue during a cruise, they usually will have focused on treating the branch. Since TCM is holistic and links different emotions to different meridians and conditions, this will be included in any thorough TCM treatment and is a good reason that the combining hypnosis with traditional acupuncture-herbal treatment proves so powerful for faster healing.

Tongue Diagnosis

Just as a constitutional acupuncturist-herbalist will check your pulses as part of the diagnostic process, your acupuncturist-herbalist will also look at your tongue.  The size, shape, textures, colors, marks, coating and moistness provide a wealth of information for accurate constitutional diagnosis.

Oriental Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine encompasses much more than mere acupuncture. TCM is truly holistic in its diagnosis techniques, perspective and treatment protocols to include nutrition, lifestyle, bodywork, meditation/spiritual life, mind-body-spirit holistic perspective and herbal medicine along with acupuncture.

“One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions.”

World Health Organization on Acupuncture
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with all other health procedures combined.  The National Institute of Health (NIH) studies show that it is the most promising of all complementary methods so far researched, stating “the data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many Western medical therapies”.

Chinese Herbology

Chinese herbal medicine is a 2,000 year old tradition using naturally occurring substances — including herbs — to enhance one's health and vitality. As opposed to Western medicine, the foundation of this approach is to support the body's natural self-healing mechanisms and abilities.

Since each patient has different needs, I carefully select and combine a variety of herbs that will synergistically blend together to achieve optimal results for your unique situation. I prescribe high-quality, professional-grade herbal medicines that are available only to qualified licensed professionals.

Pulse Diagnosis

One of the most common questions that patients ask about Chinese Medicine is: "Why does my practitioner check my pulse?" Pulse diagnosis is actually one of the most complex and important diagnostic techniques we use in Chinese Medicine. Through feeling and evaluating your pulse, I obtain an accurate diagnosis of your overall constitution, Qi (energy) flow, and internal organ health, among other things. I then synthesize all of this information into a highly effective and individualized treatment plan for your specific needs.

TCM Nutrition

Nutrition is a primary cornerstone to Oriental Medicine. We will look at your current food and beverage habits to identify areas of strength and possible areas of improvement to help you reach your health goals. The TCM nutritional recommendation for longevity weighs more on vegetable intake with the celebratory treats being reserved for, well, celebrations.

When you complete the  acupuncture intake form, there is a section for you to describe your diet habits. Complete this fully, using general descriptions for the meals section, as I recognize (actually hope) that you do not eat the same identical meals every day. If you skip meals, say so. If you tend to grab fast food for lunch, write "burger-fries" or your more frequent choices. If dinner tends to be meat & potato or a protein with 2 veggies or a microwave dinner, you are encouraged to write general descriptions. The point is to give us the starting diet/lifestyle that has played in the formation of your current health.

Any nutritional or lifestyle suggestions offered are just that, suggestions. No radical sudden exchanges will be suggested since changes perceived as "too much" cause more stress, and excessive stress is counter-productive to reaching our health goal(s). Growing into gradual change is often the healthier option.

Once the full diagnostic process is done, certain foods and spices may be recommended to be increased or decreased in your diet specific to your individual treatment plan. Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutrition Theory has classified foods according to qualities  that create specific responses and functions in the body.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine includes Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, massage, mind-body work of meditation and/or mind/spirit awareness, dietary therapy and exercises like Tai Chi or Qi Gong.  5,000 years old, this type of medicine is based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of Western medicine.  The Chinese medical model looks at the body as an energetic form and sees how imbalances of the energy ultimately create physical symptoms.  The physical body works in

Since TCM views the body as a whole, the imbalances may show up as seemingly unrelated problems, but to a trained Chinese practitioner, they paint a picture of the entire body’s health.  Besides a detailed interview, TCM uses an intricate system of pulse and tongue diagnosis, palpation of points, and other signs and symptoms to create a composite Oriental medicine diagnosis.  A treatment plan is then formulated to encourage the body towards health and homeostasis.  The greatest strength of TCM is the unique ability to restore and maintain the body’s health by promoting self-healing.

What can a client expect?

Many conditions may be alleviated very rapidly by Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (i.e. stress, headaches, acute back pain, depression, acute pain conditions, respiratory disorders).  However, some conditions that have arisen over a number of years will be relieved only with slow, steady progress.  As in any form of healing, the patient’s diet, determination, attitude and lifestyle will affect the outcome of a course of treatment.  You should notice a response to treatments by at least the third or fourth visit.  In some cases, the practitioner may recommend herbs or dietary, exercise, or lifestyle changes, and clients are encouraged to actively participate in their healing process.  Although Oriental medicine can treat most conditions, there are circumstances that can be dealt with more effectively, or in conjunction with, Western medicine.  In such cases, your acupuncturist will recommend that you contact a Western medical doctor.
